A slow, peaceful, cute home: light a Hearth Lantern and monsters, creepers, fire and endermen leave home alone.
A slow, peaceful, cute home to come back to.
Light a Hearth Lantern and the ground around it becomes home. A creeper blows up beside your house and not a block breaks. No monsters spawn in the yard, fire can't creep into the walls, and endermen leave your roof alone. Walk up to your door and your home greets you by name. Out in the wild, Minecraft is as it always was.
This is Cozy Core as a plugin for Paper 26.3 servers. Drop it in your plugins folder; players need nothing installed. (Cozy Core is also a Fabric and NeoForge mod, on CurseForge, with more in it: see "Coming to the plugin" below.)
Light a hearth
The Hearth Lantern. Make one from a lantern and four amethyst shards around it. There are six to choose from: the classic one, a soul one, and a copper one in each of copper's four colours (they never weather). Each is made from its own lantern and works the same.
Everything within 64 blocks of a placed Hearth Lantern, at any height, is home. Break the lantern and it drops back as a Hearth Lantern, even if the block under it goes or a blast takes it, so moving house is easy.
Home is safe
Inside a Hearth Lantern's reach:
- No monsters spawn naturally, day or night. Spawners and raids work as usual.
- Phantoms don't come for you, however long you've been up.
- Creeper and ghast explosions break no blocks. They still hurt, so a blast at the edge of home leaves a crater that stops where home begins. TNT works as usual, for your own building.
- Fire still burns and goes out, but doesn't spread into home or burn your walls away.
- Endermen leave your blocks alone.
Want the whole world kept safe? Three settings turn off creeper and ghast damage to blocks, endermen taking blocks, and fire burning blocks everywhere, not just at home.
Welcome home
Walking in shows "Home" above your hotbar, with a soft fireplace crackle. Rename a lantern on an anvil ("Willow Cottage") and you'll see that name instead. Each player can have a home of their own, each with its own name.
Home comforts
- Animals are safe at home. Your animals, pets and villagers aren't hurt by creeper and ghast blasts, fire or lightning, and lightning doesn't turn them into something else.
- No fall damage at home, for you and your tamed pets.
- Dropped items last an hour at home instead of five minutes.
- Glass, ice and bookshelves drop themselves when you break them at home, with no puddle from the ice.
- Keep your hotbar when you die. Your hotbar, armour and off-hand stay with you; the rest drops where you fell.
Build with less grind
Built into the plugin and switched on by itself, with nothing to add to the world:
- Wood in the stonecutter. One plank makes one set of stairs, a fence, a gate, a door, a trapdoor, a button, a pressure plate or a sign, or two slabs. A log makes four times as much. Logs also cut into wood and stripped wood, and bamboo works too.
- Slabs back into planks. Two wooden slabs make one plank again.
- Re-dyeing. Eight blocks of terracotta, stained glass, glass panes, concrete powder or candles around a dye, in any colours, make eight of the dye's colour.
- A few hard-to-find blocks to craft: scaffolding from sticks and string, red sand from sand and red dye, glow lichen from a vine and a glow ink sac, and a moss block from any leaves and bone meal.
- Traders with building blocks. Wandering traders sometimes bring azaleas, calcite and Nether fungi, and masons sell tuff, mud bricks, packed mud and calcite.
- A Cozy Core advancements tab that opens when you pick up planks, with "Safe and sound" for a creeper that blew up at home and broke nothing.
New recipes show up in the recipe book as players pick up what they need.
For server owners
- Players need nothing. It's a plain Paper plugin. Vanilla and modded clients join as usual.
- Players protect their own homes. No claims, no wand, no commands to learn: whoever crafts a Hearth Lantern and places it has a safe home around it.
- Vanilla blocks only. A placed Hearth Lantern is an ordinary lantern with a glint, so removing the plugin leaves a normal world behind.
- Seven settings, one file:
plugins/CozyCore/config.yml. - One permission. Operators (
cozycore.admin) have/cozycore give(a Hearth Lantern of any style),/cozycore place(put a named home anywhere, even from the console) and/cozycore selftest(checks that home keeps monsters away).
Settings
plugins/CozyCore/config.yml is written on the first start, and read when the server starts:
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
hearthLanternRadius |
64 |
How many blocks around a lantern count as home, sideways at any height. 0 switches the lanterns off (up to 128). |
hearthsProtectBuilds |
true |
At home, blasts, fire and endermen leave blocks alone. Off, home only stops monsters spawning. |
mobExplosionsBreakBlocks |
true |
false: creeper and ghast blasts break no blocks anywhere, not just at home. |
endermenTakeBlocks |
true |
false: endermen never pick blocks up, anywhere. |
fireBurnsBlocks |
true |
false: fire never spreads or burns a block away, anywhere. |
hearthItemMinutes |
60 |
How many minutes a dropped item lasts at home (5 to 1440). |
keepHotbarOnDeath |
true |
A player who dies keeps their hotbar, armour and off-hand. The keepInventory game rule keeps everything and wins when it's on. |
Coming to the plugin
The Fabric and NeoForge mod does all of this today, and it's coming to the plugin bit by bit:
- Home comes alive. At sunset the candles light up one by one and go out in the morning. At night your cats and dogs come home and curl up by the lantern, or on a cushion nearby. Every so often a new flower turns up in the garden, and some evenings a stray cat, rabbit or fox wanders up to your door.
- Small flames on the ground that show where home ends while you hold a Hearth Lantern.
Good to know
- Needs Paper 26.3 and Java 25 (it doesn't load on Spigot). Not tested on Folia.
- The Hearth Lantern looks like the lantern it's made from, with a glint: a plugin can't bring its own textures.
- Source and issues are on GitHub. MIT licence.
I made this for my own worlds: home should be somewhere you want to come back to. Found a bug or have an idea? Open an issue on GitHub.
